Knox College invites applications for the position of Academic Counselor in the TRIO SSS Achievement Program
This full-time, 12-months; benefited position is responsible for counseling and advising a caseload of project participants, co-facilitating the TRIO 100 course; providing one-on-one and small group instruction; and developing workshops that assist with skill development, retention, and graduation of participants.
Academic Counselor coordinates the student advisory committee and the TRIO Emerging Leaders Program.

GENERAL FUNCTION:
Support the retention to graduation of a caseload of TRIO students through academic counseling/advising and facilitating workshops and events to enhance students’ personal, financial, career, and leadership development.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Duties
Provide advisement, instruction, assessment, and holistic support to caseload of students (60%)
Develop, promote, present, and/or assess informational workshops and cultural events (15%)
Participate in staff meetings/development (10%)
Coordinate student advisory committee and the TRIO Emerging Leaders Program (5%)
Assist with assessment of project activities/programs (5%)
Document and maintain student contact records for individual and group contacts/events (5%)
Marginal Duties
Assist with TRIO Bridge Program (each fall)
Co-teach a section of TRIO 100, first-year transition course as needed (each fall)
Escort participants on off-campus events as needed (each term)
QUALIFICATIONS/COMPETENCIES:
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree is required.
Must be familiar with issues facing first-generation and low-income college students and students with disabilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in a related field such as college student personnel, higher education, or counseling is preferred.
Experience teaching or tutoring at the college level also preferred.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
Work Requirements
The TRIO Achievement Program is located in the Center for Teaching & Learning with staff offices on the first floor and the lower level.
A student computer, common space, printer/fax machine, and conference/records room are located in the lower level area.
The building has a ramp and accessible doors on the first floor; there are stairs to the lower level and low-clearance ceilings.
The TRIO Office is open 8 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
Some evening and weekend work are required, typically related to student programming and conference attendance.
Physical Requirements
85% of time is spent sitting during student appointments and staff meetings/development.
Workshop/event facilitation involves standing, walking, lifting (10-20 lbs.
), and carrying (10-20 lbs.
).
All aspects of the position require the ability to speak, hear, and see.
