Job Summary The Laboratory Assistant will perform tasks in several areas of the clinical laboratory.
The Laboratory Assistant will be assigned specific areas of responsibility within the scope of the job on a daily basis.
The Laboratory Assistant will be expected to monitor the workflow, prioritize tasks, and coordinate the performance of tasks by other phlebotomists.
The Laboratory Assistant will be expected to perform phlebotomy as much as necessary, depending on the daily workload.
The Laboratory Assistant will be expected to report frequently and directly to the Laboratory Administrative Leader about the completion of tasks, as well as the section heads in the Laboratory.
Performs routine clerical duties such as typing, filing, sorting, batching, scheduling appointments, charting, and answering the telephone.
Job Specifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent.
At least one year of experience as a phlebotomist.
Should have secretarial background and experience with computers, office equipment and personal computers.
Required to maintain a current Driver’s license.
JOB KNOWLEDGE: Must be knowledgeable of the process of phlebotomy technique and understand the proper use of equipment.
The patient population must be considered when assessing job knowledge required from the employee.
Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred Proficiency in office procedures such as word processing, filing, writing, answering phones and conveying information.
Must possess good organizational and communication skills.
ABILITIES, INTERESTS AND TEMPERAMENTS Finger dexterity required to manipulate small objects, such as test tube and microscope slides during cleaning and sterilization duties.
Manual dexterity required to place and arrange articles in cabinets and on shelves.
Worker must also handle laboratory glassware carefully to avoid breakage.
A preference for activities dealing with things and objects to clean laboratory equipment.
A preference for routine, organized activities to assist medical technologist Work situation involves doing things only under close supervision, allowing very little room for independent action in working out job problems.
Ability to deal effectively, tactfully, patiently and pleasantly with patients, family members, physicians and staff members.
Must be neat and able to work independently.
Must have the ability to work with a variety of patients of all populations (e.
g.
developmentally appropriate care, cultural diversity, patients with pain, victims of abuse or neglect, and diagnosis or procedure specific such as patient with congestive heart failure or cesarean delivery).
Ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions.
Ability to maintain necessary records.
Follow departmental and MDH policies, safety regulations and accrediting standards.
